Planning Guide for a Successful Mother’s Day Event at Your Spa or Massage Therapy Business

If you’re ready to plan a fun, fresh, and effective event at your spa, massage practice, or wellness business—but you’re not sure where to start—you’re in the right place. This post is based on one of my favorite workshops, and we’re using Mother’s Day as the theme. But honestly? You can use these tips for any event throughout the year.

Whether you're launching a new service, boosting gift certificate sales, or want to connect with your community, events can do amazing things for your business.

Business Events Work (And Why I Love Them)

One of the best things about planning an event is that it gives you something new to talk about in your marketing. I don’t know about you, but I get tired of always saying, “Book a massage—it’s good for you!” An event gives people a new reason to engage and a fresh way to remember you.

It also helps build trust. A lot of people are hesitant to book personal services with a stranger. A fun, low-pressure event lets them see your space, meet you, and get comfortable before committing to a full service.

Oh—and they’re fun! Especially if you enjoy decorating, setting up beautiful displays, and sharing what you love with others.

Event Mistakes I’ve Made (So You Don’t Have To)

Yes, I’ve had events that flopped. One time, I held a grand reopening and barely promoted it. I did it because I felt like I “should,” but I didn’t bring the energy or planning it needed—and that showed.

Here are the top things to avoid:

Not planning enough. Winging it rarely works.

Not inviting enough people—or reminding them. People are busy. Reminders matter.

No clear sales plan. If you want people to buy, you need to make it easy.

Nothing to do. If guests just stand around, they’ll leave quickly. Plan activities!

Choosing Your Event Style

Here are some types of events you can try:

Open House + Sale: Great for holidays like Mother’s Day or Christmas.

Educational: Teach something cool—like self-care or skincare routines.

Customer Appreciation: Just say thank you with light snacks and no pressure.

Networking: Host a morning coffee for fellow business owners or community leaders.

Some events bring in sales immediately. Others help grow relationships that lead to future bookings and referrals. Either way, it’s all good!

Theme Ideas for Your Massage or Spa Event

A good theme makes your event stand out and makes planning decorations, food, and offers easier.

Here are a few to get you thinking:

Mother’s Day Tea Party

Stop & Shop Gift Event

Cookies & Creations (kids decorate cookies while adults shop)

Spring Fling

Summer Skincare Soirée

Just choose what feels fun to you. If you’re not excited, it’ll be hard to promote it well.

Event Timing Tips

Plan your event for a time that works for your audience. For example, Saturday the week before is often ideal for a Mother's Day event. People love last-minute gift ideas!

And please keep it short and sweet—two to three hours is plenty.

Create Special Offers to Attract Buyers
You’ll want 3 to 5 packages or offers that appeal to different budgets. Include at least one “splurge” option and one “kid-friendly” option—like a 30-minute session with a cute little gift bag.

Not sure what to include? Think about:

Adding time to services

Pairing services together

Gift bags or mini products

Coupons for future visits

Make sure at least one offer is only available at the event!

How to Keep Costs Down

You don’t need a big budget. I’ve pulled off great events for $200 or less.

Here’s how:

Use what you have—tablecloths, unsold products, decorations.

Shop the Dollar Store.

Collaborate with local vendors (like a bakery or artist).

DIY food and drink options.

Over time, you’ll collect reusable supplies like signs and table décor.

Easy and Engaging Activities

The key is to have things for people to do:

Mini services (by someone else—not you!)

Product testing station

DIY bath salt bar

Raffle drawings every 30 minutes

A tour of your space, with lights, music, and aromatherapy going

And don’t forget a simple sign-in sheet or giveaway form so you can follow up.

How to Get People to Actually Show Up

Here’s your invitation strategy:

Email your list. Send 3 emails: 2 weeks out, a few days before, and day-of.

Text or DM people personally. Yes, it’s more work—but it’s effective.

Create a Facebook event. Share sneak peeks as you prep!

Printed invitations. Especially good for smaller client lists or VIPs.

And on the day of, text the people who said “I want to come!” Just a friendly, “Hey! Can’t wait to see you today at 3!” can make a big difference.

Don’t Forget the Follow-Up!

After your event, take notes on what worked and what you’d change. Then… Follow up with anyone who couldn’t make it.

Offer limited-time access to your specials (but not the extras).

Start planning your next one!

The more often you host events, the easier they become—and the more people will look forward to them.

So there you have it—my best tips for creating events that grow your massage therapy or spa business, attract new clients, and make selling gift certificates feel fun and natural. I’ll be working on a companion workbook and checklist soon, so keep an eye out for that.

If you’re planning an event, I’d love to hear about it—shoot me a message or tag me online. You’ve got this!

Stay golden,
Gael 💛
